Mindfulness is a concept that has gained great popularity in recent years.
Last weekend we went for a drive up to the mid-North to check out some old ghost towns. One place, Kanyaka Station, was actually an old homestead in the mid 1800s, which has since fallen into disrepair. This area was inhabited by Aboriginal people for thousands of years before European settlement. The traditional owners of the area are the Banggarla people. The old stone buildings only have walls, no rooves. The signs describe a busy cattle station with many families living there and a busy community. What we saw was quiet, serene and beautiful. I took the opportunity to reflect on what life would have been like for the people living there and how different it is to mine.
In terms of domestic duties, my life, with the advent of modern technology, is much easier. I have a washing machine, a dishwasher and three other people in the house who do their fair share of household chores. The isolation for the people on the station would have been difficult, particularly if they had come from a big city. On the long drive home, I thought about the aspects of my life that I have to be grateful for, such as the previously mentioned mod-cons, the internet, feminism and my health.
